Results of  “The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art” Contest 2010
 
“The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art” Contest (NCC) is a math contest designed for students of Grades 3 to 10 as a warm-up for the Canadian Math Contests. The contest is named after the Chinese ancient classic book "The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art". NCC began in 2008. Many attendees of NCC08 and NCC09 achieved distinctive honours in Canadian Math Contests, among them including:
  • Zhenle Cao, Fengyang Wang and Melinda Zhou, who were listed on the Honour Roll of 2009 Pythagoras Contest.
  • Tony Tinghan Hu and Star Xu, who achieved perfect score of 150 in the 2009 Gauss Contest.
  • Lanney Fumitsuki Wang, who won Gold & 2nd place in Math Kangaroo International in 2009.
  • Rongzhao Li and Elbert Lai, who were listed on the Honour Roll of 2010 Pascal Contest.
  • Elbert Lai and Henry Zhu, who achieved 2010 Fryer Contest Gold Standard.
  • Ben Tan, who was listed on the Honour Roll of 2010 Byron-Germain Contest.
  • Elbert Lai and Torry Chen, who were listed on the Honour Roll of 2010 Pythagoras Contest.
  • Billy Jin and Rongzhao Li, who achieved perfect score of 150 in the 2010 Gauss Contest.
  • Lanney Fumitsuki Wang, who won Silver & 11th in Math Kangaroo International in 2010.

The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art Contest received stronger response this year. A total of 59 students wrote the contest, some of them came from other cities. The web pages of NCC questions were visited/downloaded over 1800 times to date since announcing the NCC10. The NCC Problems Committee members and Problem Editors worked hard for months to design the contest. They are:

The 3rd Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art Contest (NCC10) [2010/10/09]


Sponsored by Confucius Institute at the University of Waterloo, Grand River Chinese School will host "The 3rd Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art Contest (NCC10)" on Nov. 20, 2010, 2:45pm to 4:00pm. NCC10 is a math contest designed for students of Grades 3 to 10 as a warm-up for the Canadian Math Contests (Thales Contest for Grade 3, Byron-Germain Contest for Grade 4, Fibonacci Contest for Grade 5, Pythagoras Contest for Grade 6, Gauss Contest for Grades 7 and 8, Pascal Contest for Grade 9, and Cayley Contest for Grade 10). The contest is named after the Chinese ancient classic book "The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art"  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nine_Chapters_on_the_Mathematical_Art). Among the students who wrote NCC08, 6 students achieves outstanding scores on the honour rolls of Canadian Math Contests in 2009, and among students who wrote NCC09, 9 persons/times are listed on the honour rolls of Canadian math contests this year, including two perferct scores.

 

Participating in NCC10 is free. To sign up for this contest, you need to email the student name, age, school name, grade, phone and email address to gr_chineseschool@yahoo.ca by Oct. 30th. Other details will be notified to eligible students by email.

 

Students achieving outstanding results in the contest will receive awards provided by the Confucius Institute. The questions and answers for previous year's contests can be found at NCC08 and NCC09.
