Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL) Class on Saturdays

  • A program operated by the school board as a part of the international language program
  • Designed for students from non-Chinese background families
  • Eligibility: Ontario students eligible to attend Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8
  • Taught by experienced CFL teacher
  • Class time: 9:30 am - 12:00 pm, Saturdays
  • Parent Association recommends a donation of $50 per school year (tax deductible) to cover the extra cost for smaller classes than the Ministry of Education standard class (families that need financial aid can get waiver). 
Beginner Level Secondary School Chinese Language Credit Class on Saturdays

  • A class is offered to beginners with little knowledge of Chinese language
  • Operated by the school board as a part of the international language program
  • Eligibility: Ontario students eligible to attend secondary schools (Grades 9 to 12) and adults
  • Credits are recognized in Ontario
  • Class time: 9:30 am - 12:30 pm, Saturdays
  • Highly qualified teachers with experiences
  • A counseling fee of $20 (cash only) need to be paid on registration day to the school board, and a few dollars for covering the textbook costs.               


3-Year-Old Chinese Class on Saturdays
  • This class is operated by Grand River Chinese School on not-for-profit basis
  • Eligibility: 3 years old in Spetember
  • Small class learning environment
  • Highly qualified teachers experienced in teaching young children
                              

 

  • Tuition: $60 per term (two terms per school year)
  • Class time: 9:30 am - 12:00 pm, Saturdays
  • Parents need to accompany their children initially for a few classes
  • Parents are required to volunteer in class 1 to 2 times per term

                                     


JK-Grade 8 Chinese Program on Saturdays

 

  • A program operated by the school board as a part of the international language program
  • Eligibility: Ontario students eligible to attend Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8
  • Class time: 9:30 am - 12:00 pm, Saturdays
  • Small class learning environment
  • Highly qualified teachers with experiences

                                                                            

  • Stimulating students' interest in learning
  • Parent Association recommends a donation of $50 per school year (tax deductible) to cover the extra cost for smaller classes than the Ministry of Education standard class size (families that need financial aid can get waiver).

Grades 9-12 Secondary School Chinese Language Credit Program on Saturdays

  • A program operated by the school board as a part of the international language program
  • Eligibility: Ontario students eligible to attend secondary schools (Grades 9 to 12) and adults
  • Total 4 credits at 4 levels (c1-c4)
  • Credits are recognized in Ontario
  • Class time: 9:30 am - 12:30 pm, Saturdays
  • Highly qualified teachers with experiences
  • A counseling fee of $20 (cash only) need to be paid on registration day to the school board, and a few dollars for covering the textbook costs.

Requirements for Parents

(International Languages Elementary Program Handbook, WCDSB)

 

Parents provide a home environment that supports and complements the aims and objectives of the language program. Parents can be responsible for:

 

  • Ensuring their children’s regular and punctual attendance
  • Ensuring that they promptly pick up their child(ren) at the end of class
  • Communicating with instructor when their children are absent or ill or in other special circumstances
  • Promote and support the program in the wider community
  • Taking advantages of opportunities to consult regularly with language instructor about their children’s progress
  • Communicating with the instructor when they have concerns specific to their child
  • Encouraging their children to share classroom language experiences with them, their family and the community members, and to provide their children with opportunities to practice their language skills
  • Promoting a positive attitude towards language learning and reinforcing the concept of language learning in the home
  • Facilitating the completion of home assignments related to the program
  • Showing willingness to act as resource people for the language program when and where possible
  • Encouraging their children to adopt appropriate classroom attitudes and behaviour
